AWT4CL Update for July 2025
Teaching Transferable Skills: While there is broad interest in transferable skills (e.g., critical thinking, communication, teamwork), many educators have received limited guidance on how to infuse such skills into the curriculum. A new guide is trying to change that. Titled “Teaching Transferable Skills Using a Sociocultural Perspective,” the guide outlines key principles for enhancing skills-related teaching and learning, including useful tables and templates. How might you pair this with the AWT4CL resources?
Why Employers Value ‘Durable’ Skills: Last week, The Chronicle of Higher Education hosted a virtual forum on this topic, helping to answer key questions: “How can higher education ensure students develop the skills that truly endure?” and “How can institutions produce career-ready graduates who have the resilience and agility to navigate a future where the only constant is change?” The forum recording is now available to watch on demand.
Career Adaptability: While much has been written about “career readiness,” there is a growing need for attention to “career adaptability.” A recent post on “Career Adaptability: A Workforce Essential Skill” notes that career adaptability does not necessarily mean completely changing jobs. Instead, it is about being open to changes needed in response to career, technological, and environmental shifts. The post includes some helpful suggestions for cultivating adaptability for agricultural careers.
Cultivating Careers: Our AWT4CL blog series continues with a post from Adam O’Neal, describing his experience with the AWT4L employability skill badges. This and other contributions are available on the AWT4CL blog: https://sites.google.com/vt.edu/awt/blog
