AWT4CL Update for August 2024
Confidence in Community Colleges: Recent research by Gallup reveals Americans are more confident in community colleges than four-year colleges and universities (Marken, 2024). Affordability seems to be a key driver, but community colleges are particularly credited for their ability to “teach relevant skills and knowledge people can use in their jobs/lives.” That point is at the heart of the AWT4CL project. So, let’s further the evidence and give the public even more confidence in these programs!
The Art of the Overnight: Could a trip to see lemurs provide the educational experience needed for a successful career in horticulture? Ben Casteel explores that question in his recent blog post, and he makes important connections to the durable skills of communication, decision-making, professionalism, and leadership. You can find this and other project-related blog posts at https://sites.google.com/vt.edu/awt/blog
Job Interview tips: A recent video from AgHires presents “How to Stand Out After a Job Interview,” and the suggestions are further supported in a blog post on “12 Do's and Don'ts of Interviewing for Your Next Ag Job.” Consider sharing this advice with students or others on the job market who may benefit from the insights.
Olympism: In the midst of the Summer Olympic Games, it can be helpful to consider the Olympism that is the spirit behind the games. According to the International Olympic Committee (2024): “The original values of Olympism as expressed in the Olympic Charter were to ‘encourage effort,’ ‘preserve human dignity’ and ‘develop harmony’” (para. 2). In that regard, Olympism is a great compliment to the efforts of the AWT4CL program. So, enjoy the games!
