AWT4CL Update for March 2023
Why Are Students So Disengaged?: That’s the question addressed in a recent article with Inside Higher Ed. Findings from a recent survey reveals students “believe that material more directly connected to real-life issues could help solve the problem.” The AWT4CL project is working to address these issues, as highlighted in the recent blog post on workplace scenarios.
Cohort Blogging: Last month, Tom Scales described his experience with incorporating "soft skills" into the curriculum. In Tom's post, you can learn more about how to create and use workplace scenarios to introduce and discuss soft skills with students. All of the AWT4CL project-related blog posts are available at the following URL: https://sites.google.com/vt.edu/awt/blog
Advancing the Cohort: An earlier blog post includes recap of the AWT4CL cohort January check-in: “Ideas for Enhancing Agriculture Workforce Training.” Other details on cohort activities are included in redesigned pages of the website: “About the Project” and “Engagement and Outreach.“ Much thanks to Jama Coartney for coordinating this communication!
2022-23 Career Guide: AgCareers.com provides a useful Agriculture & Food Career Guide, which includes advice and insights on a variety of career-related topics. For example, the article on “How to Choose the Right Internship” advises a “two-way interview” to help assess fit. The career guide may be worth sharing with students.
This work is supported by Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) 2020-67037-31032 1022287 from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture. Inquiries about the project should be directed to Dr. Eric K. Kaufman, the primary investigator. Additional information about the grant is available online at the USDA-NIFA project portal.
