AWT4CL Update for February 2023
Career-Readiness Missing the Mark: According to a recent article in Inside Higher Ed, "Career-Readiness Initiatives are Missing the Mark" The writer highlights three problems: “a misunderstanding of the nature of skills themselves, an overreliance on off-campus work-based learning as opposed to more accessible work-integrated learning in the classroom and a lack of guidance to help students navigate what can be a dizzying array of career-related learning opportunities available to them.” The AWT4CL project is working to address these issues.
Resume-Worthy Skills: An AgHires blog post describes “Valuable Soft Skills to Include on an Agriculture Resume,” including adaptability, problem-solving, decision-making, time management, organizational, and interpersonal skills. This advice may be worth sharing with students.
Cohort Blogging: Last month, Dr. Mallory White explored the potential benefits of social interactions and personal buy-in with grading rubrics. In Mallory’s post, you can see an example rubric and student feedback on the experience. All of the AWT4CL project-related blog posts are available at the following URL: https://sites.google.com/vt.edu/awt/blog
Advancing the Cohort: The AWT4CL cohort met via Zoom in January to connect and discuss topics of mutual interest, including PDSA projects, opportunities to share key insights with a broader audience, and the potential of incorporating digital badges into a learning management system. We look forward to the presentations and enhancements that emerge from those conversations.
