This academic year (2020-2021) I was honored to be a recipient of the prestigious Via Teaching Fellowship from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Virginia Tech. Through this fellowship, I'm currently serving as an instructor of record for an upper-class course in Computer Applications for Civil and Environmental Engineering. The class covers different uses of applied computer applications for performing linear algebra and matrix operations related to Civil Engineering systems, conducting data analysis, and solving optimization problems. The software I'm teaching in this course includes advanced Excel, Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), Tableau, and Python.
Between 2018-2020. I've served with the Center for Enhancement of Engineering Diversity (CEED) at Virginia Tech, where I have instructed a professional development seminar for first-year engineering students covering a multitude of topics in professional writing, communication skills, time management, and tackling culture and diversity differences in a workplace. This role has given me an opportunity to work first-hand with the students and actively mentor, interact, and create bonds with them in a non-traditional classroom and workshop setting. Within that role, I have also led the facilitation of over 15 diversity and inclusion workshops for first-year general engineering students, supported the office's K-12 pipeline programs, and represented the office and the College of Engineering in multiple minority student recruitment events and college fairs across the State of Virginia.
During the 2017-2018 Academic year, I have worked as a Data Analyst for the Office of Enrollment and Academic Assessment in the College of Engineering. My work was primarily focused on the management and extensive analytics of data for first-year and transfer General Engineering students. The data analyzed included information pertaining to the demographics, performance, academic record, and college-related milestones to identify patterns and trends through a comprehensive statistical analysis. Ultimately, creating detailed reports and visualizations of the outcomes to aid in the college's administrative decision-making processes.
Having graduated with a First Class B.Sc. in Civil Engineering, my first step after graduation was serving as a Teaching Assistant in my department at the University of Khartoum, Sudan, where I assisted in the teaching of undergraduate classes and lead instruction in my department’s environmental engineering and computer laboratories. During my teaching assistance experience, I’ve helped in significantly increasing the overall average grades for the classes I have assisted in while developing teaching, communication, academic coaching skills, and a better understanding of working in an academic setting. I have ultimately utilized those experiences and knowledge as a member of the authors’ team that have written and published the first-ever comprehensive Sudanese guide focusing on International Education and Standardized Examinations in 2016!
