My name is Awad Abdelhalim. I was born and raised in Sudan, where I earned my undergraduate degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Khartoum in the Fall of 2014. I’m currently a Postdoctoral Research Associate with the Urban Mobility and Transit Labs at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). I've completed my Ph.D. in Transportation Infrastructure and Systems Engineering at Virginia Tech, where I worked as a Research Assistant with Professor Montasir Abbas and serve as an Instructor of Record in the College of Engineering.
During my graduate studies, I've instructed and TA-ed several engineering classes, and conducted research that spanned multiple aspects of traffic safety and intelligent transportation systems (ITS) applications, including driver behavior modeling, transit systems improvement, crash dataset analytics, and applied machine learning applications for traffic safety assessment. The focus of my dissertation was on the use of applied computer vision and simulation modeling to proactively address traffic safety issues. My current work on urban mobility focuses on travel choice behavior and transportation equity for U.S-based public transportation agencies. I'm also conducting independent research projects investigating potential use cases for computer vision in public transit environments.
