Why Summer 4-H Camp?
Junior 4-H Camp is for youth turning 9 before September 30, 2021, and up to age 14. Youth ages 14-18 may apply to camp in leadership roles.
While there will be many changes this summer, one thing that won’t change is the opportunity for campers to have positive life changing experiences. Campers are still going to try new things, make new friends, create lifelong memories, and gain the independence that comes from a week at 4-H Camp. Those experiences are the cornerstone of what 4-H is all about. While some things may look different, please know that we are tirelessly combing over the details to make camp a safe and fun environment for camper growth this summer!

How will 4-H Camp look different this year?
4-H Camp will operate at 50% capacity. That means instead of eight campers and two teens in a cabin, there will be a maximum of four campers and one teen. Bunkhouses will be similar with half the number of campers and a reduced number of teens. Campers will be grouped in packs according to their lodging assignment and will travel through out the day with their group.
This year, with the exploratory approach, every camper will experience a wide variety of classes during the week .
What safety precautions will be in place?
We will be following guidelines from the State of Virginia, the Centers for Disease Control and the American Camping Association in addition to Virginia Cooperative Extension and 4-H in order to put many layers of safety precautions in place. As always, our goal is to keep everyone safe at camp while encouraging young people to experience challenging growth as they explore new things, make friends, and gain independence.
(1) Instead of our normal bus transportation, Parents/Guardians will be responsible for dropping off and picking up their camper(s) from Holiday Lake 4-H Educational Center during the designated time.
(2) There will be fewer campers in each cabin. The lowest risk situation happens when small groups of campers stay together throughout the day and have limited interaction with other groups of campers. Therefore, several cabins or bunks will be grouped together with approximately 12 youth and three teens per group. This group will travel together for classes, meals, recreation time, etc.
(3) Instead of having campers choose classes and having an intensive three-day class experience, we are treating this year as a class exploratory with each camper getting to visit each class once during the course of the week. Your camper may even discover a new interest through this process.
(4) We will still have special evening programs and campfires, but these activities will take place in the large recreation fields in order to allow for proper social distancing. What happens if it rains? As in previous years, we have rainy day plans in place, with lots of activities to keep campers engaged.
(5) We are asking families to monitor themselves in the two weeks leading up to camp (a form will be provided) so as to minimize exposure to illnesses, such as COVID-19. Please do not send a sick child to camp.
(6) We will have daily health screenings with temperature checks each morning. Unfortunately, we recognize that there is a potential that someone will get sick. Anyone exhibiting symptoms of illness will be isolated and the camper's parents/guardians or emergency contacts will be notified to come to camp to pick up the sick individual.
So 4-H Camp will be the same, but different?
Exactly. As always, 4-H is committed to a safe and positive learning experience for all youth. We welcome youth of diverse backgrounds. Financial aid is available for families in need. Please contact us if you need a financial aid application.
