BLACKSBURG, Va. - No. 8 Virginia Tech opens up conference play Friday in Cassell Coliseum as it takes on the Virginia Cavaliers.

Tech was supposed to begin conference play against North Carolina on Jan. 15 in Chapel Hill but due to too many COVID-19 cases in the UNC program, they matchup was postponed the match to Jan. 30.

UVA comes to Blacksburg unranked with a 1-1 overall record. Only playing in two matchups so far this season, the Cavaliers look to avenge their loss against No. 4 NC State last week as well as their seven-game losing streak against VT.

This will be the 78th meeting all time between the Hokies and the Wahoos. Virginia Tech leads the all time series 48-28-1.

Virginia Tech is coming into this match Friday with a lot of momentum. The Hokies have been on a tear lately, winning their first four matches and starting the season off ranked in the top 10.

VT also has six of its wrestlers ranked on the InterMat poll while UVA has five. This could lead to potentially three ranked matches in the 133, 165 and 285 weight classes.

Sam Latona was named ACC Wrestler of the Week after his impressive 3-0 record two weekends ago in the quad match at West Virginia.

Virginia Tech has eleven wrestlers that are undefeated so far this season. Sam Hillegas, Mekhi Lewis and Sam Latona all have 4-0 records.

Friday’s match against Virginia at 5 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum will be televised on ACC Network Extra.
