Virginia Tech Wins Fourth Straight Match vs. JMU

BLACKSBURG, Va. — Virginia Tech secured the 5-2 win over James Madison with a comeback during singles play after losing two of three doubles matches on Wednesday in Blacksburg.


On court two for doubles, Tech’s Ryan Fishback and Jordan Chrysostom took down JMU’s Gonzalo Adis and Alvaro Arce, winning 6-2.


That was the Hokies’ lone doubles win on the afternoon, however, as the Dukes swept the other two matches. Matthis Ross and Hugo Maia fell to JMU’s duo Oscar Hernandez and William Karpinski, 6-3, on court three.


Soon after, JMU clutched the first point of the day with a win from Holden Koons and Paul Mendoza over Ryan Kros and Alex Ribeiro on court 1, 7-6 (7-2).


Maia made up for his loss in the doubles round by clinching the first win in the singles matchup over Mendoza, 6-2, 6-2. Following his win, Carlo Donato notched another point for the Hokies over Karpinski, 6-3,6-2.


Another victory was scooped up for Tech on court six with Alvaro Ariza dominating Mario Pena in straight set wins of 6-1, 6-1. Ariza’s win gave the Hokies a 3-1 lead with three matches to play.


Ribeiro defeated Arce 6-2, 6-2 next to earn another point for the Hokies and clinch the match for Virginia Tech.


The action continued on court five as another victory the Hokies stretched their lead to 5-1, courtesy of Fishback. The freshman knocked off JMU’s Hernandez, winning 6-2, 7-5.


In the final match of the contest, Koons defeated Ross on court one to earn JMU a final point. Ross won the first game 7-6, though Koons fought back and won two straight sets, 6-3 and 1-0 (11-9).


The final score resulted in a 5-2 win for Tech, its fourth straight victory on the season. The Hokies (5-2, 1-0 ACC) will face Wake Forest next on Friday, Feb. 26, seeking a fifth-straight win. James Madison (0-1) returns to the court on Saturday, Feb. 27 at VCU.
