With 5:45 left in the game, Elizabeth Kitley was subbed out for the final time, ending a career night for the third-year center as the Hokies led the Colonials, 71-35.

The impressive scoring performance was a career-high for Kitley, who finished only three points shy of setting a new single-game program record. The mark is still owned by Brittany Cook, who racked up 36 points against Miami back in Feb. 2008.

No. 24 Virginia Tech (2-0) defeated George Washington (1-1) on Thursday night to pick up its second victory of the year, 75-38.

While the Hokies finished the night with a 37-point victory, it was largely aided by the monster performance from Kitley.

The 2021 first team all-ACC center accounted for nearly half of VT’s scoring, shooting 17-of-21 from the field for 34 points. She also finished the game with nine rebounds, finishing one away from a double-double.

Aside from Kitley’s massive performance, the Hokies struggled to get going in the blowout victory.

VT turned the ball over 13 times in the game, looking confused on offense at points and making lackadaisical passes that were eventually intercepted by George Washington.

Tech’s defense took a quarter to settle in, allowing George Washington to shoot 47% from the field in the first quarter. The Hokies buckled down on defense after that, though, allowing under ten points from the Colonials in each quarter after.

The game showed that there are still some kinks for Virginia Tech to work out during non-conference play before its ACC schedule kicks in later this year.

Virginia Tech will try to continue to find its identity as a team on Sunday, when the team takes on George Mason (1-0, 0-0) in Fairfax, Virginia at noon.
