BLACKSBURG — Basketball is inching towards its return at Cassell Coliseum.
Virginia Tech finalized its 2021-22 schedule, slating the Hokies for 31 matchups as they aim to qualify for their second consecutive NCAA Tournament bid. Tech made its return to the Big Dance in 2021 after the 2020 tournament was canceled amid covid-19 concerns.
The Hokies fell in an overtime thriller against Florida in the first round of last year’s tournament that included Nahiem Alleyene’s game-tying three pointer as the clock ticked down in regulation.
The 2021-22 campaign will mark head coach Mike Young’s third season in Blacksburg after spending the prior 17 years at Wofford. Tech finished last season 15-7 overall with a 9-4 record in conference play.
VT opens up its season with five non-conference games before traveling to Brooklyn, N.Y. for the NIT Season Tip-Off where it’ll face Memphis and either Xavier or Iowa State.
Next, Young’s squad will travel to College Park to take on Maryland on Dec. 1 in the Big Ten-ACC Challenge. VT lost last season’s Big Ten-ACC Challenge to Penn State in Blacksburg.
Three days later, the Hokies open up conference play at home with a matchup with Wake Forest. After that, they’ll round out their non-conference schedule with a trip to Dayton and Charlotte to play St. Bonaventure in the Basketball Hall of Fame Shootout on Dec. 17.
From there, Virginia Tech returns to the ACC grind for the rest of the regular season with a game at Duke and at North Carolina.
Tech has one guaranteed primetime ESPN matchup — it’ll host Virginia on Feb. 14 at 7 p.m.
