After falling to the University of Miami on Saturday, Virginia Tech looked to get back into the win column on Sunday against Boston College. The Hokies were able to keep every set close but they fell short in all three sets on the road.

Virginia Tech went down early 7-5 in the first set, but the Hokies stormed right back and took the lead at 21-20. The teams traded points back and forth for the remainder of the first set until it was ended with a kill by the Eagles’ Clare Naughton that gave Boston College a narrow 25-23 victory.

The Hokies came out ready to play in the second set and they quickly went up 9-6. It seemed as if BC was lost and that it might not be able to dig themselves out of the hole that it had created. The Eagles were able to come back and take the lead 20-17 late, however.

Once the lead was taken by Boston College, it never looked back and took the second set 25-20 to take a 2-0 match lead.

The third set was a must-win for the Hokies, which is something that they are all too familiar with early in this season.

Virginia Tech looked good early and the two sides were knotted up at six apiece in the third set. The teams continued to trade points with one another and it did not look like either team would be able to pull away easily. Virginia Tech, however, committed a few attack errors that helped Boston College take a commanding 22-15 lead. The Eagles were able to take the third and final set 25-17 and completed the sweep of Virginia Tech.

Outside hitter Kaity Smith continued her dominant season and led the Hokies with 10 kills and one ace. Brie Postema also filled the stat sheet, as the sophomore from Blacksburg got 14 assists and one ace as well.

The Eagles’ Clare Naughton had herself a game, getting 12 kills and 13 digs. Amaka Chukwujekwu also had a solid game with nine kills and a team-high four blocks.

Boston College improves to 3-12 and 2-12 in ACC play and will play Wake Forest in a weekend series on April 1 and 2.

Virginia Tech falls to 6-9 and 5-9 in conference play. The Hokies will end their season in Clemson, South Carolina in a weekend series on April 2 and 3.
