BLACKSBURG, Va. — With 10 seconds left in regulation Jacelyn Lazore set up for the free position shot. The sophomore took three steps forward and launched a shot that flew past Dayna Martinetto into the right side of the net to tie the score at 9, sending No. 25 Virginia Tech and No. 14 Jacksonville to overtime.

In the first half of the overtime period, the Hokies maintained possession for the majority of the three minutes. Despite being on the offensive attack for the entire first half, Virginia Tech was only able to register one shot on goal, a high miss from sophomore Paige Tyson.

Jacksonville took advantage in the second OT period after winning the initial draw. Ninety-seven seconds into the period, Emma Crooks committed a foul on Jacksonville’s Sarah Elms that gave the senior a free position opportunity.

Elms, the Dolphins’ leading scorer, fired in a shot directly past the outstretched arms of goalie Angie Benson to win the game for Jacksonville.

Elms’ overtime score extended the Hokies’ losing streak to four games as Virginia Tech (2-5, 0-3) fell to No. 14 Jacksonville on Saturday (4-0, 0-0), 10-9.

Although they finished the game on the wrong side of the score, the Hokies came out firing, scoring the first four goals of the game. Momentum quickly shifted after that point as the Dolphins netted the following three scores to cut the Hokies lead to one.

Virginia Tech was able to cushion the advantage to three goals before the half, courtesy of scores from Caroline Allen and Paige Petty. The Hokies led 6-3 at the break.

Two straight goals from Jacksonville in the first eight minutes of the second half brought the Dolphins to within a goal of the Hokies.

After trading pairs of goals, Jacksonville tied the score at eight with a score from Elms at the 12:35 mark in the second half. The Dolphins grabbed the lead three minutes later with another Elms’ goal.

Elms’ second goal was the final score for either side until Lazore’s last-second goal to tie the game.

Allen, Crooks, Petty, Lazore, and Tyson all recorded scores for the Hokies. Sara Goodwin and Sarah Lubnow finished with two assists apiece.

Virginia Tech returns to Thompson field on Tuesday night to take on Radford (0-7, 0-1) at 6 p.m.
