No. 15 Virginia Tech Narrowly Falls to No. 12 Virginia, 12-10

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — With 11:14 left in the first half, Emma Crooks fired in her fifth goal of the season to tie the game for the sixth time.


The tie was as close as the Hokies came to the lead for the rest of the game, as the Cavaliers scored six of the following eight goals in the match.


No. 15 Virginia Tech (2-2, 0-2) fell to No. 12 Virginia (2-0, 1-0) on Saturday afternoon, 12-10, dropping its second game in three contests.


Virginia Tech was down early after Virginia scored the first goal of the game in twenty-five seconds.


The Hokies returned the favor two minutes later with a goal from Sarah Lubnow to tie the game at one goal apiece.


Less than a minute later, Kiki Shaw broke the tie, giving the Cavaliers the one point advantage.


The Hokies fired back, scoring three out of the following four goals to take a 4-3 lead, courtesy of scores from Paige Tyson, Whitney Liebler and Lubnow.


Virginia tied up the game again a minute later with a score from Mackenzie Hoeg to knot the game up, 4-4.


Both teams scored goals in the two minutes following Hoeg’s goal, with scores from Virginia Tech’s Paige Tyson and Virginia’s Annie Dyson.


The Cavaliers scored three of the final four goals of the half to own an 8-6 lead at the intermission.


More back-and-forth ensued to begin the second half with an opening goal from Ashlyn McGovern for UVa followed by a Paige Petty score for the Hokies.


Petty scored again after another Virginia goal to put Virginia Tech within two goals, 9-7.


The Cavaliers quickly iced the contest with two scores in twenty-four seconds to grab a four goal advantage with 10:23 remaining.


Petty and Tyson scored two more goals for the Hokies in the final stretch but Virginia Tech couldn’t complete the comeback.


Petty and Tyson each scored Hat Tricks in the loss while Lubnow added two goals and three assists.


The Hokies travel to South Bend next Saturday to take on Notre Dame (1-0, 0-0) at 12 p.m.
