BLACKSBURG — Sunday was senior day for Mitch Harper, Alexandre Ribeiro, Ryan Kros and Chase Bernstine and Virginia Tech came away with a 4-3 victory over No. 36 Duke.


In the doubles portion of the match, the only win came from Harper and Ribeiro as the duo won 6-4 on court two. With Duke winning the match on court three, the doubles point came down to Jordan Chrysostom and Ryan Fishback on court one.


Down 5-2, the duo fought back and tied the match at five. Tied with Duke’s Sean Sculley and Garrett Johns at six, the Blue Devils took the final game and won the match, 7-6, handing Duke the doubles point.


In the singles portion, No. 96 Matthis Ross, Hugo Maia, Fisback and Harper all earned wins for the Hokies.


Harper was the first victory of the day and won 6-4, 6-3 on senior day. Fishback won Tech’s next point, extending the lead to 2-1, with a three-set win over Duke’s Luca Keist on court five.


Ross won two sets in a row to win on court two to extend Tech’s lead, giving Maia the chance to clutch the match for Tech.


Maia did just that, winning a decisive third set 7-6 (7-1) to give Virginia Tech the victory over Duke.


VT (9-6, 5-4 ACC) was boosted into fifth place in the ACC standings with Sunday’s win. Duke (7-7, 3-3 ACC) fell back behind Tech into sixth.


Tech’s next match is against No. 6 Virginia in Charlottesville at 3 p.m. on April 1.
