BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech women’s basketball head coach Kenny Brooks was awarded a contract extension from Director of Athletics Whit Babcock on Tuesday afternoon. The extension keeps Brooks in Blacksburg through the 2025-2026 season.

"We're energized about the trajectory of our women's basketball program under the leadership of Kenny Brooks," Babcock said following the announcement. "Virginia Tech women's basketball is in good hands with Coach Brooks at the helm. Kenny is a Virginia native who is well-respected across the region and has been adept at bringing talent to Blacksburg and developing players in the nation's top basketball conference. He is a proven winner and a fantastic representative of Virginia Tech."

Brooks, in his fifth season with the Hokies, has seen success that few before him can boast. Virginia Tech has won a total of 87 games under Brooks, with each of the four seasons he has coached producing 20 wins or more.

"When you take over a program, you will endure many challenges,” Brooks said. “Over the last four years, I've grown as a coach competing in the best conference in the country.”

In Brooks’ first season as a Hokie, he guided the program to a record setting 15 straight wins to open up the season, and reached 15th in the AP Poll.

Brooks has coached Tech to three straight NIT appearances and in 2018, reached the NIT Championship where the Hokies lost to Indiana in a tightly played contest.

In the 2019-2020 campaign, Brooks led the Hokies to a program-best 11 ACC wins and a tie for fourth place in the ACC regular season standings, with a final record of 21-9.

“We are looking forward to continuing an ascent towards the top of the ACC standings,” Brooks added.

If not for the coronavirus pandemic, the Hokies were on track to reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006.

Prior to Tech, Brooks coached for 14 years at his alma-mater, James Madison University, where he became the program’s all time winningest coach that included 337 wins, six NCAA Tournament appearances and five conference titles.

Brooks will look to begin another successful campaign as the Hokies take on Richmond on Wednesday at home at 4 p.m for their first game of the season.
