WHO CAN ATTEND?

While there will be many changes this summer, one thing that won’t change is the opportunity for campers to have positive life changing experiences. Campers are still going to try new things, make new friends, create lifelong memories, and gain the independence that comes from a week at 4-H Junior Camp. Those experiences are the cornerstone of what 4-H is all about. While some things may look different, please know that we are tirelessly combing over the details to make camp a safe and fun environment for camper growth this summer!

  • 4-H Camp is co-ed and open to campers ages 9 to 13.

  • 4-H Camp Registration opens on June 10, 2021, closes June 28, 2021, 4:30PM, and available to the first 100 campers (with full payment), or whichever occurs first.

  • 4-H Camp Preregistration will occur online this year. You'll complete online and print a copy to bring to the Pulaski Extension Office, along with the 4-H Health History Report Form, 4-H Medication Form and 4-H Equine Waiver.

  • We will be at half-capacity, 100 campers, this year with three people per room to allow for social distancing requirements.

  • Campers will be grouped in packs according to their lodging assignment.

  • Campers can request up to two roommates and we will do our best to accommodate requests.

  • Campers in the same room will also be assigned to the same class track. So if you would like to room with a friend, please make sure that you choose the same class tracks on your registration.

Each room will be a part of a pack which serves as the camper’s “family” or "pod" during the week of camp. Maximum 25 campers/CITs/Teens to a pack. Packs will participate in a separate class tracks. There will be 8 class tracks total. More information about class tracks offered can be found on the Classes Page.

WHO SUPERVISES 4-H CAMPERS?

Each year we recruit Counselors in Training (CIT) and Teen volunteers 14 and up to serve as counselors for our camp. These CITs and teens, as well as our adult volunteers, 4-H Extension Staff, and 4-H Center Staff, complete a training series and are tested on core concepts before attending camp. Our staff is trained according to the American Camp Association requirements and you can rest assured that your child will have a safe, enjoyable experience at 4-H Camp!

NATIONAL ACCREDITATION

Virginia’s 4-H camping program is recognized throughout the nation as a leader in 4-H camping programs. Each of the six Virginia 4-H Educational Centers has achieved and maintains American Camp Association (ACA) accreditation.

Parents and guardians should always look for the ACA seal when selecting a camp for their child to attend. Only about 25 percent of all camps in the nation are accredited by the ACA, the recognized camp accreditation organization in the United States. Having ACA accreditation means that the camp meets the highest standards for safety, food service and staffing, health care, and program quality.

Each 4-H Educational Center maintains these standards annually. Additionally, all 300 standards are reviewed every three years for reaccreditation. Each 4-H center program staff person, as well as the adult and teen 4-H volunteers who participate in camp, are carefully selected and trained prior to the camping event.

COVID-19 PRECAUTIONS

Our team is continually utilizing several resources to adapt operations this season including: The American Camp Association, Virginia Department of Health, Association for Camp Nurses and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Some of the measures that we will take to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 include: limited capacity, social distancing, small consistent groups, masking, enhanced cleaning, and daily health screenings. More details about our guidelines can be found on the Parent Resources Page. As always, our goal is to keep everyone safe at camp while encouraging young people to experience challenging growth as they explore new things, make friends, and gain independence.

(1) Drop off and pick up for camp will be different this year as we follow mitigation strategies to keep campers safe and healthy. Parents will be responsible for transportation of campers to and from 4-H camp. More details will become available from the 4-H Center as we get closer to camp.

(2) There will be fewer campers in each lodge. The lowest risk situation happens when small groups of campers stay together throughout the day and have limited interaction with other groups of campers. Therefore, lodges will be grouped together with approximately 25 youth, including Counselors In Training and Teens. This group will travel together for classes, meals, recreation time, and evening programs.

(3) There will be 8 class tracks available to campers.

(4) We will still have special evening programs and campfires, but these activities will take place in the large recreation fields in order to allow for proper social distancing. What happens if it rains? Well, we’re still working on those plans, but just like rainy days at camp in the past, we will find activities to fill the time and we will still maintain proper safety precautions.

(5) We will have daily health screenings with temperature checks each morning. Unfortunately, we recognize that there is a potential that someone will get sick. Just like in typical years, anyone exhibiting symptoms of illness will be isolated and emergency contacts will be notified to come to camp to pick up the sick individual.
