It is common to feel overwhelmed, anxious, unhappy or isolated at times.
We believe it is important for our students to know that there is someone they can turn to if they are in need of personal help and support.
If you feel that you are struggling with any aspect of school life or you are experiencing any problems and would like to talk to someone in confidence, please talk to your Homeroom teacher, your Head of Year, or contact one of our counsellors.
Where appropriate and with consent from the student, we will also invite parents in for family counseling and/or sharing sessions.
Please note however, that for some cases, there may be times where we suggest that students and parents seek external support to overcome any issues they are facing.
We offer both INDIVIDUAL and GROUP counselling to help students with the following:
A student who has a counselling relationship with a school counsellor has the right to privacy and the promise of confidentiality. The counselling relationship between students and their school counsellor requires an atmosphere of trust and confidence. Students must trust the school counsellor in order to be able to enter into a meaningful and honest dialogue. However, students are informed that exceptions to confidentiality exist in which counsellors must disclose to others information they have obtained in the counselling relationship in order to prevent serious and foreseeable harm to students themselves or others, or if such disclosure is legally required.
The role of the school counselor in regards to confidentiality is to:
support the students’ right to privacy and protect confidential information received from students, the family, guardians and staff members;
explain the meaning and limits of confidentiality to students in developmentally appropriate terms;
provide appropriate disclosure and informed consent regarding the counseling relationship and confidentiality;
inform students and the family of the limits to confidentiality when the student poses a danger to self or others;
keep personal notes separate from educational records and not disclose their contents except when privacy exceptions exist;
assert their belief that information shared by students is “confidential” and should not be revealed without the student’s consent.
