Read through the newsletter for updates on student progress each week. Don't forget to add important dates to your family calendars so you do not miss out on any upcoming performances of students.
Holy Moly everyone! I am incredibly pleased to announce that we raised $4,480! Thank you all so much for continuing to spread the word! This will help students to pay for upcoming trips and any supplies that we continue to use throughout the year, such as reeds and valve oil. Truly AMAZING!!!!!
Any money raised by students from the Domino's fundraiser can help pay for either the Branson Trip or Six Flags Trip.
Practicing their instrument outside of class is beneficial because it helps reinforce what we've learned in class, builds muscle memory, and allows students to focus on troublesome spots at their own pace.
Consistent practice strengthens your technique, increases confidence, and makes it easier to keep up with new material in class. It also gives you the chance to focus on challenging sections, experiment with your sound, and develop a deeper connection to the music. This is especially important for wind and brass players, because your embouchure—the way you shape and use the muscles of your face and mouth—is like any other muscle in your body. Just like an athlete trains specific muscle groups to improve strength and endurance, musicians need to exercise their embouchure regularly. Practicing outside of class helps build stamina, flexibility, and control, making it easier to produce a clear, steady tone and play for longer periods of time without tiring out.
8-12th Grade students have been working on spring concert music. They have had multiple playing assignments: Rampage due March 6th, Appalachian Air due March 14th, and Achilles Wrath due March 27th.
On Friday, April 10th, the 8-12th grade band performed for a set of judges at Jefferson R7 High School. They received a master class clinic with one of the judges, Gary Gackstatter, immediately following the performance. Students had the chance to hear instant feedback about their performance and ways to improve upon their playing for the future. They also watched 3 other bands perform. After the performances, we celebrated at Quonset bowling alley in Crystal City. I was incredibly proud of their performance and look forward to sharing the music with everyone at our Spring concert next week!
Our spring concert date is Thursday, April 23rd at 6:30 pm in the Fieldhouse. Call time for students is 6:00 pm in the cafeteria.
Jazz band: Students who are in jazz band have been invited to perform with Parkway for a jazz concert on Wednesday, April 29th at 7:00 pm at Parkway South High Theatre. We hope to see Valley Park members in the audience while we perform our two jazz band songs and then watch Parkways jazz band as well for an evening of jazz.

6th and 7th grade students have been working on fundmentals in their Essential Elements method book. We have learned many new notes and rhythms in prepartion for their upcoming Spring concert. This week, we have started to learn a new piece of sheet music called Violento.
Students have a playing assignment: Violento measures 34-end due Friday, April 3rd in the Google Classroom.
All students have received information in class about the Six Flags Performance Trip. This is a voluntary trip that allows students to perform on a stage within Six Flags for a set of judges. They will receive feedback from their performance. After the performance, they will be able to enjoy time in the park before returning back to school. The date of the performance is Friday, April 24th and will be an all day event. 6th graders and new to band 7th graders must audition for the group. Their Violento playing assignment will be their audition. They will be informed the week of April 6th if they made the group.
Announcement of students selected to perform was email out to families.

Adults and non-student performers wanting to attend the Six Flags performance will purchase tickets at the gate the morning of our performance. We perform at 9:00 am so be sure to get there with enough time to get through the security line. The park is only open to schools and audiance members so the lines are super short. It is $35 per ticket. Six Flags is a cash free facility but do have cash to card booths throughout.
Students are starting to sit down with the counselors to choose classes for next year. I truly hope each and every student that is currently in band continues on within the program. I am always available to chat if you have any questions about classes or how to make a high school schedule work with the various requirements and elective options. It is very possible to take band all 4 years of high school and I love having each and every student apart of the program!
