6th and 7th grade students removed an invasive species in the Valley Park community. They did an awesome job!

Students practiced find area of irregular shapes using highlighters and black lights. 

We celebrated Pi day on March 13! Thank you for all the donations of circular snacks, we had TONS of food and a lot of fun! 

To learn about heat transfer and phase change, science made ice cream. Thank you to the students who led this lab. It was fun, educational, and yummy! Here is the recipe we used (several more can be found online). In a small bag put 1/2 cup whole milk, 1 tbsp sugar, and 1/4 tsp vanilla extract. Seal the bag tightly. In a larger bag place 1/2 cup of ice cream rock salt (found in frozen section at Schnucks) and fill with ice. Place the small bag of ingredients inside. Shake until frozen.

Students took their iReady benchmark 2 and we celebrated those that showed growth! 

Students explored a substance that acts like 2 states of matter - a liquid and solid. This is known as a non-Newtonian fluid. Fun fact: ketchup and toothpaste are also non-Newtonian fluids.

Students learned about genotypes and phenotypes and created elves. We had a great time looking at genetic codes to determine the traits. 

Science had fun playing the role of medical interns and diagnosing a patient. We also dissected chicken wings to see how bones and muscles work together.

6th grade math students worked with ordering and comparing rational numbers as silent ninjas! 

We learned about working with each other, focusing on different learning styles. We had to "Save Sam" (a gummy worm) and put a life jacket (life saver) on him after his boat (cup) capsized. Students could only use paperclips to touch the materials. It was cool to see different ideas and everyone listening to one anothers thoughts.

Students learned how to make scientific observations using sight, smell, hearing, and touch. We also learned how to use microscopes and looked at a variety of slides.
