Mr. Anderson's Math Site

Classes overview

In my mathematics classes, we will focus on formulating/discovering multiple strategies for solving realistic problems, becoming fluent with number problems, and being able to problem-solve both independently and in a group setting. It is believed by many that mathematics class is a boring subject with only boring content. I will do my best to present math in a way that is engaging and interesting to learners.

About me

Hi! My name is Alex Anderson. I'm gonna be honest with you, when I was in school (from Kindergarten through 12th grade), I did not like math class. It might've even been my least favorite subject. I had a math teacher in 9th and 11th grade who started to get me thinking about teaching as a profession. He showed such a caring for his students that it made me want to try hard for him. I still didn't enjoy math very much (nor did I feel like I was very good at it), but I was amazed how he could get me to try so hard. I decided to choose math education as my degree, and I'd see after a semester if this was what I wanted to do. I had amazing experiences exploring the math I learned in middle and high school! The interesting part was that we didn't approach math like I did when I was younger (take notes, do worksheets, quiz/test, and then repeat). We learned the same standards of math when I was younger, but we learned it through real-world type problems, and we got to use blocks, tape measures, geo-boards, and tons of other hands-on materials. We were forced to not just give our answer, but to justify our answers as well. When I was younger, I always felt like I was able to get answers, but never explain them and truly understand what I was learning. I hope to create an experience in math class for my students where they are engaged, interested, and comfortable sharing their ideas.
