History of Jazz Part II

Instructor: Cameron Koenen

Jazz is an exciting form of musical expression! There are many different styles of jazz that express everything from peace/calm to excited happiness, from sadness to anger, from music for dancing to music for deep thought. But jazz music has its very own story. Come and learn how it all got started and about some of the incredible people and circumstances that created it. This course will continue the story beginning about 1925. All students are welcome to take this course, it is not necessary to have taken History of Jazz Part I to take History of Jazz Part II.

Overview: Through a combination of instructor-guided listening, discussion, the use of resources (including the documentary “Jazz” by Ken Burns) and research, students will garner an understanding of some of the most important people, music, and historical events that shaped jazz. We will also gain an awareness of the context of jazz music in relation to American society and history. We will explore the chronological development of jazz beginning about 1925 as well as sample jazz from other time periods including contemporary examples.
