The University of Freiburg was founded in 1457, this was an important factor in the development of the city to continuously be targeted towards younger generations. In 1944, over 80% of Freiburg was destroyed in a world war two air bombing raid. This destruction ultimately led to the ability for in depth planning to be made in how the city was to be constructed in a sustainable way. Political support allowed this construction to be implemented to contain reconstruction, land use, and transportation plans for the city.
Seven lessons for implementing sustainable transport policies
1. Implement controversial policies in steps
2. Plans must be adaptable and flexible over time
3. Policies must be multi modal and include incentives AND disincentives
4. Fully integrate land use and transport planning
5. Citizen involvement must be an integral part of policy development and implementation
6. Support from higher levels of government is crucial to making local policies work
7. These policies must be long term
