Tennessee Baja Racing is a team of dedicated students at the University of Tennessee interested in the automotive industry and engineering. We compete in the Society of Automotive Engineers Baja racing series. Each year we are challenged to design and build a high performance single seat off-road vehicle which will compete in a series of rigorous challenges to test every aspect of the design.
To create an environment where university students grow, learn, and apply skills through the fast-paced and demanding motorsports environment, specifically the Society of Automotive Engineers Baja Series.
In short, we make better engineers by building racecars..
Each year, we attend a competition where we test our vehicle and are judged on our design. Competition events include:
Static Events
Vehicle Design
Teams present their design to a panel of industry experts who evaluate their engineering decisions.
Cost Reduction
Teams are encouraged to reduce the cost of their designs and must submit a prototype cost and cost reduction report.
Business Proposal
Teams compete against others in a mock request for proposal scenario.
Technical Inspection
Vehicles are required to pass a thorough technical inspection to ensure they are safe and follow the rules.
Dynamic Events
Traction
Teams compete for the greatest distance or the fastest time in hill climb or sled pull events.
Acceleration
Vehicles must accelerate from a standstill and cover a distance in the fastest time.
Maneuverability
Vehicles must maneuver an autocross-style course with sharp corners, steep grades, and more.
Suspension
Teams must navigate a rigorous set of obstacles, including trenches, rocks, logs, and jumps in the fastest time.
Endurance
A 4-hour wheel-to-wheel endurance race. Teams must complete the most laps in the set time.
