This collection of artifacts indicates the difference between the image of Scientology that was displayed to the public in the 1970s versus the image in the 2010s. At first, the public was naive and did not know much about Scientology because Scientologists purposefully withheld certain information and only shared their highlights. Scientologists took advantage of this naivety and fed people false or misleading information in order to convince them to join. Vulnerable groups were targeted and taken advantage of as Scientology was presented as a solution to their issues. The first two artifacts allow you to see how one could be convinced of the power and credibility of Scientology if they were in a vulnerable position. There was careful consideration that went into the materials that Scientologists put out into the world and they knew what would work to make people believe in their practices. Members signed up not knowing that these statements by Scientologists were not factual. When it came to the Sea Org, Scientologists tried to make it seem like an honorable organization in order to get people to join. In more recent years, The Church of Scientology has lost most of its ability to curate their public image. Ex-members have come out and shared their experiences from inside the organization and people are no longer in the naive position of not knowing what goes on inside Scientology. This takes away the initial excitement that hearing of Scientology once had because it seemed to provide a sense of hope. Since the experiences that they have put people through are real, they cannot combat them and try to protect themselves any longer. This change between the 1970s and the 2010s is beneficial to society because people are finding out the truth about Scientology before they get trapped in it themselves.Â
