SILVER WINGS
THE LIEUTENENT GENERAL FRANK M. ANDREWS CHAPTER
"KNOWLEDGE, WISDOM, AND THE COURAGE TO SERVE."
"KNOWLEDGE, WISDOM, AND THE COURAGE TO SERVE."
IN THE BEGINNING, we were known as Angels Flight, with the first chapter being at the University of Omaha in 1952. Across the country, there were different "Angels Flights" under many different names, with different uniforms and different service projects. However, it was not until 1957 that unification took place. It was at the eighth annual conclave of Arnold Air Society where different "Angels Flight"s sent sixteen representatives to met in New York City to band together, along with Arnold Air Society, under one national headquarters.
AS THE YEARS PAST Angels Flight members worked to establish their organization as one focused on professional development and a service-oriented mindset, while not losing their affinity and support for the Air Force ROTC Detachments at their perspective campuses. Then, in the 1980s, a drastic change occurred to the organization. The organizational title of Silver Wings was finally in use. This change was to accommodate for incorporating a diverse group of members, to change the focus to be mainly on their local campus, and to more easily recruit people. To this day our organization thrives and supports our sister organization, Arnold Air Society, our AFROTC Detachments the AFA, and the United States Air Force.
THE LT. GENERAL FRANK M ANDREWS CHAPTER is dedicated to serving both the United States Air Force and its subordinates but also the Volunteer community. We strive to live by the Silver Wings motto, "knowledge, wisdom, and the courage to serve," and the Volunteer Creed, which reads, "the one that bearth torch, shadowth oneself, to bring light to others." Service to others, especially those in the armed forces and military families, is our top priority. With the combination of cadet and civilian students that make up our Silver Wings chapter, we will always strive to uphold the Volunteer Spirit and strive for excellence in all we do.
HERE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE, Knoxville, our Silver Wings chapter has the honor and privilege to support and serve with Detachment 800. We believe that we have one of the finest Air Force ROTC Detachments in the country. The University of Tennessee’s AFROTC cadets has a solid foundation and sense of pride in their heritage as students and as members of a long line of Volunteers who have gone before them and served their country with honor, dignity, and pride.
