Meet the Panel Speakers
Elan Head
Elan is the Senior Editor of The Air Current and contributor to Vertical Mag. She is a commercially-rated helicopter pilot and FAA Gold Seal flight instructor. You can find Elan exploring the world by air, including long lining.
Leigh Coates
Leigh is the Former Chief Pilot/Owner of VSHelicopters in Valdez, Alaska. She is the first female Gravity Jetsuit Pilot. Leigh is an experienced long line pilot and 20 years as a commercial helicopter pilot however, now spends her time as a content creator and flying for fun.
Sami Challburg
Sami is an experienced long line pilot working for PJ Helicopters flying a variety of long line missions. She previously worked for Helicopter Express as an aerial firefighting pilot and was the first recipient of the Erickson /Volo Mission scholarship.
Annie Paya
Annie Paya started her career in firefighting on the ground with the U.S. Forest Service. Now she battles wildland fires from the Air. Annie is an experienced aerial firefighting pilot currently working for Capitol Helicopters flying the BlackHawk.
Lisa Zumkeller
Born and raised on a farm in Germany until 13 yrs old, then immigrated to Canada. In four years, Lisa went from co pilot experience fighting fires, power line projects, mountain flying, Medevac NVG etc. to captain in the Arctic on the bell 206 longranger with longline experience.

This event is to bring women currently in the long line industry together with women who are interested in flying external load / aerial firefighting missions as way to foster networks and lasting support.

DAY 1 - May 1st, 2024
8:30am Arrival & Check-in
Check-in and pick up your swag bag.
9:00am Equipment Class
Learn about the key equipment used in long line operations and the importance of knowing their function and to be able to inspect for safety.
11:00am Speaker Panel
Hear from five awesome women who are leaving their mark on the helicopter industry! Hear their stories of why and how they got involved in external load.
12:00pm TX BBQ Lunch (vegetarian options available)
1:30pm External Load Q&A
A chance to ask questions to External Load Company Operators, Management, and Pilots.
3:00pm Flight Demonstrations
Flight demonstrations of multiple external load exercises and types of loads; including the precision tower and aerial firefighting water drops.
4:30pm - 6:15pm Networking
Hors d’oeuvres and refeshments will be provided at the Volo Mission Farm House.

A chance for women in attendance to try their hand at Vertical Reference and picking up a long line.
