English Speaking Board (International) Ltd.

ESB is an Awarding Organisation specialising in Oracy qualifications. One Headteacher calls our certificates ‘A golden ticket to social mobility and life long success’

For 70 years our unique external Oracy assessment model brings professional assessors to schools to facilitate a confidence building, speaking and listening assessment mapped to national curriculum standards. We have qualifications from Early Years to Key Stage 5 – at Key Stage 5 learners can earn up to 30 UCAS points.

Through Oracy skills, we stretch the most able, support the least confident and realise the potential of all. We financially support schools in areas of disadvantage, as well as schools offering specialist SEND provision.

Our published research from some of our most disadvantaged primary and secondary schools demonstrates an impact score of 9/10 and 8/10 respectively that ESB qualifications have a huge impact on the Oracy skills of their learners in the wake of the pandemic.

Poetry By Heart

Poetry By Heart is the national poetry speaking competition for schools. It’s also a website for teaching and learning about poetry – by heart and out loud, and with plenty of choice for young people to explore poems and find the ones they love.

The 2024 competition opens on National Poetry Day, 5 October 2024, and an invitation to take part has been sent to every primary and secondary school in England.

Registration, participation and competition entry are free, and the Poetry By Heart website offers a wealth of resources and support materials for teachers including a wide range of suggested poems, classic, contemporary and diverse, including many written by living poets.

The competition culminates in its Grand Finale, held at Shakespeare’s Globe, at which pupils from every region of England perform live alongside some of the UK’s top poets.
