Group Update, 2/1/2024: ESST Workgroup is winding-down activities. The group email listserv and member website will remain online for six months. New member application is now closed.
The Earned Sick and Safe Time (ESST) Workgroup for MN Schools has been created to assist public school administrators with the Earned Sick and Safe Time Law (ESST). This new law goes into effect on January 1, 2024, and successful implementation will require coordination among leave policies, collective bargaining agreements, technology systems, and internal communications. HR and Business Office staff involved in leave policy and administration are invited to join, learn the law, and connect with peers based on role and HR/Payroll system.
To get oriented in the law and what this workgroup is up to, check out the following resources.

Municipal Implementations of Earned Sick & Safe Time
Four cities have an ESST ordinance in effect. These city ordinances are not equivalent to the state law that goes into effect January 1st, 2024, however they provide an excellent model for employers. As of October 6th, the MN Department of Labor and Industry was working with these municipalities to identify differences between the state statute and local requirements.
