Criteria for Success

  • Arrive promptly to class-that means you're in your seat before the bell rings
  • Come prepared with your technology! That means your Chromebook is at school everyday and is charged and ready to use
  • Bring your notebook/paper and writing utensil everyday
  • Meet all deadlines for assignments
  • All assignments should reflect earnest effort and quality

Grading Policy

Students’ grades will be determined by their performance on a series of projects and assessments. Each project and assessment will have an individual standards-based rubric measuring each student’s completion of 3-5 different Common Core Eighth Grade ELA standards. In order to get credit for the project or assessment, students must achieve a minimum of “Foundational (2)” in all areas of the rubric.

4= Innovative

3= Proficient

2= Foundational

1= Emergent

Students’ rubric scores will be averaged at the end of the quarter. Here is the breakdown of rubric averages to their grade equivalents:

A = 3.21-4.0

B = 2.41-3.2

C = 1.61-2.4

D = .81-1.6

F = 0.0-.8

*A NOTE ABOUT MASTERY BASED LEARNING

There may be times when I will grade using mastery based learning criteria. In these cases, you will only be checked off for an assignment once you have achieved true mastery. There will be no rubric-based sliding scale. If you demonstrate mastery then this will be considered to be the equivalent of earning a 4 (or “Innovative”) on rubric.

REVISIONS

We value a student’s grit and perseverance. Our grades are based on a student’s ability to show effort, growth, and mastery. With that said, if a student is not satisfied with his or her grade on an assessment, he or she may revise it provided that they did the required leg work in advance. In other words, only students who adequately complete classwork and homework are entitled to revise their work.

Technology Protocols

We will use lots of technology in class. In order to maximize its use, I will expect the following rules to be adhered to:

  • When I call out "Dells down" that is non-negotiable and it means your device should be put away or closed on the table
  • Your device should never be used on your lap and should be clearly visible at all
  • Your device should never be used (unless teacher makes an exception) while teacher is instructing or a classmate is presenting
  • Devices, other than your Chromebook, can only be used with teacher approval
  • Earbuds and headphones should by default, not be used in class unless teacher has expressly approved it
