Philosophy

VIDA’s Design Labs are designed to foster the skills needed to engage in the design thinking process that is at the heart of our magnet. Design Labs must do three things:

1. Go deep into the design thinking cycle

2. Develop the technical skills necessary for advanced design

3. Foster the creativity needed for authentic design thinking

Recycled Art is intentionally less structured than tradition electives, because it is meant to be a place where students are free to take risks as they explore their own creativity. This class is meant to push you outside of your comfort zones and force you to find alternate solutions to creative struggles. We reuse donated items instead of buying brand new art materials, not only to promote an eco-friendly mindset, but also to learn how to look at materials in new ways and find new purposes for them.

Grading

Essentially, you will be graded on your VIDA GILLS:

  1. Grit to persevere: Demonstrate strong work ethic as you push through challenges and roadblocks in your projects.
  2. Innovating through design: Try new things! Take risks!
  3. Leading with integrity: Do your part in the set-up processes and clean up processes. Lead by example.
  4. Learning about empathy: Help one another. Help the environment.

Homework

There won’t be homework assignments for this DL but if you are super excited about your project and want to continue the fun at home, you’re more than welcome.

Safety

During the first week of this DL, you will go through a safety training and then take home your document to get parent permission to use tools like wire cutters, exacto knives, hot glue, etc.

Mondays

Mondays are our “checking-in” time, much like an advisory period. We will be working on Thrively, doing grade-checks and other touching-base activities. This is the time to talk to me about any concerns you have related to classes, grades, communicating with other teachers, etc. I’m here for you!

Rotations

Once each quarter we will rotate through both the istudio and public speaking. Each lasts a week long and I will notify you the week before we go to those rotations.
