As we expand more in-person services post-pandemic, it has been an exciting and refreshing time at VISIONS. The summer and fall sessions at VISIONS Center on Blindness and VISIONS Center on Aging relieved the social isolation and loneliness experienced by VISIONS blind participants. Our active volunteer community advisory boards resumed their in-person event fundraisers. We are still offering virtual programs for youth, adults and older persons where there is a demand and a need. I am very proud of our vision rehabilitation staff that offered presentations at international, regional and state conferences on VISIONS work and its positive outcomes for our blind participants.
It is a bittersweet moment as I announce my retirement after 36 years as Executive Director/CEO and 52 years of work and affiliation with VISIONS. My last official day is January 31, 2024. The VISIONS Board of Directors has concluded a search for my successor. With nearly 50 applicants, they had a choice among many excellent candidates. I am thrilled to share that, after a swift, yet rigorous search process, the Board of Directors and I have found the ideal successor to continue my legacy: Sylvia Stinson-Perez. Sylvia is a seasoned and highly-respected leader in the Blindness community with over 20 years of executive leadership experience It is a difficult decision to leave this amazing organization. VISIONS is a thriving nonprofit organization, with a very active Board of Directors, a highly qualified, innovative, and caring staff, a dedicated group of volunteers, a large number of supporters and an involved and growing number of blind participants and their families. VISIONS has learned over 96 years of serving the blind and multiple disabilities communities to see what is possible and turn those opportunities into a better life. I thank the Board of Directors for the honor of working at VISIONS.

Carin Pai with her two children, Zach (left) and Dylan (middle).
VISIONS/Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired is pleased to honor our long-time supporter Carin L. Pai, CFA, Head of Portfolio Management at Fiduciary Trust International. Carin’s contributions to VISIONS have made an impact over several years, as she has been a consistent donor and valued consultant to our leadership team.
Throughout her career, she has been committed to community involvement and an advocate for diversity. By promoting a diverse workforce and inclusive environment at Fiduciary Trust International, Carin fosters innovation and fresh perspectives, which are critical for sustainable growth in an evolving financial landscape. Her advocacy for diversity and inclusion extends to her leadership of the Asian Pacific Islander Business Resource Group, which has not only enriched the culture of Fiduciary Trust and its parent organization, Franklin Templeton, but has resonated throughout the industry. She currently co-chairs the group, which has a mission to educate, connect and promote diversity and inclusion across the organization and throughout our community.
Carin is a senior executive at Fiduciary Trust and is responsible for leading investment processes and equity strategy. She is the national head of portfolio managers across the firm, providing guidance and support to the team of advisors.
Beyond her daily work, she is committed to mentoring those starting their careers at Fiduciary Trust. In 2010, she founded the Investment Associate program at the firm with a mission to establish clear responsibilities, personal development objectives and direct career paths for entry-level professionals. Since then, several participants have become successful portfolio managers at the firm and now serve as mentors to younger colleagues. For Carin, it has been rewarding to see them flourish, knowing that she served as a guide along their journeys.
Her dedication earned her the New York Business Journal’s Women of Influence award in 2016, honoring women business leaders in the NYC area for their achievements in the marketplace, commitment to the community and mentoring. That same year, she was honored with the Money Management Executive’s Top Women in Asset Management award. In 2023, she was recognized as Portfolio Manager of the Year in the Wealth Solutions Report Pathfinder Awards for Asian American and Pacific Islanders.
Carin’s influence extends to leadership roles outside her firm, including serving on the board of trustees of the Citizens Budget Commission, a nonpartisan and nonprofit organization pursuing constructive change in the financial industry in New York City and State. This participation showcases her commitment to promoting responsible financial practices and driving positive change within the broader financial landscape. Carin is also a member of Chief, a global organization for senior executive women, with a network to support the advancement of women in leadership.
Carin's devotion to helping others also extends to her clients. While communicating perspective on the financial markets is crucial, Carin emphasizes the significance of understanding each client and fostering trust. Throughout her career, she has nurtured personal relationships, which, in her view, have been pivotal to weathering market turbulence together.
We are fortunate to have Carin as a colleague and consultant, and extend our thanks to her for her continued commitment to VISIONS.
Volunteers from UPS once again helped to beautify our VCB campus by power washing buildings, tending to the greenery, and ensuring our walkways and steps were accessible and clear of debris. In addition, a special group of technology-focused volunteers led by VP of Technical Services Jim Holland, worked to upgrade the campus' IT infrastructure, adding new security cameras at our Vocational Rehabilitation Center, and improving overall Wi-Fi reception.
Participants of our Summer programs enjoyed the welcome updates, as did those in our residential Employment Readiness Programs, who are now able to take advantage of better internet reception to complete the program.
We are very appreciative of the hard work and dedication put in by UPS each year, and are proud to have them as one of our corporate partners.
Be sure to check out the video above the article for UPS' take on volunteering for VISIONS.
"Empire City Casino by MGM Resorts is a proud supporter of VISIONS/Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired. MGM Resorts is focused on supporting causes and organizations that provide people with the resources needed to thrive in the communities that have welcomed us. Being able to help the number of blind and visually impaired New Yorkers and their families prepare to enter the workforce is one of the many reasons we are so happy to support VISIONS."

On August 7th, VCB welcomed donors, supporters, and members of various Lions Clubs throughout New York for a rededication celebration for our newly renovated accessible swimming pool, made possible in large part by contributions from the Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF), the MD-20 District R1 Lions, and the Fund for the Blind. The event included remarks from Nancy D. Miller, VISIONS Executive Director/CEO, Ruben Coellar, Chief Program Officer, donors and speakers from various Lions Clubs who shared their thoughts and experiences volunteering with VISIONS throughout the years, and a presentation of plaques honoring the organizations who supported the pool's renovation.
We appreciate all of the support the Lions Clubs have shown VISIONS over the years.
This summer, 49 families (with a total of 51 children) came together at VCB to enjoy an amazing summer filled with training, activities, and helpful resources for parents. Children enjoyed sensory play, interactive petting zoos, adaptive games, sports, and yoga. At the same time, parents participated in peer support groups and discussions focused on services offered by the NYS Commission for the Blind, and VISIONS. What made this summer especially exciting was that families got to (once again) enjoy poolside activities at our newly renovated, fully-accessible swimming pool, made possible in large part by the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) the MD-20 District R1 Lions, and the Fund for the Blind!
VCB was once again the site of our Summer Transition Program, a 4-week residential experience for teenagers, designed to help build their independent living skills in a safe and nurturing environment.
Dual-certified Vision Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT) and Orientation & Mobility (O&M) staff focused on independent living skills including preparing meals and snacks, doing laundry, increasing hygiene awareness, maintaining a clean space, and navigating around their community utilizing adaptive tools and smartphone apps.
Our Pre-College Program, hosted at Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY, provided high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to experience college life. During the program, participants took an Intro to College course, completed homework assignments, and learned important skills like time management, hygiene, adaptive technology, and socialization.
With the help of our Dual-certified Vision Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT) and Orientation & Mobility (O&M) staff, participants also learned how to navigate the campus safely, prepare meals, and advocate for and utilize accessibility services offered by colleges like Manhattanville.
To provide a balance of work and recreation, participants enjoyed unique outings and activities that allowed them to utilize the skills they learned from our staff.
One such activity was the first ever "Master Chef" competition, which included traveling to the supermarket, managing a budget, shopping, and preparing dishes by following recipes. Participants utilized adaptive tools and worked together to safely prepare these dishes, which were tasted by a panel of staff judges, who loved how inventive the meals were.
Between activities like go-karting, playing arcade games, bowling, and learning adaptive tennis at Court 16, a nonprofit in NYC that provides accessible tennis instruction to participants of all ages, participants left both programs with newly gained independent living skills, a brighter outlook on their futures, and new lifelong friends.
Special congratulations to our Summer 2023 Employment Readiness and Pre-ETS Participants! During their 15-week stay at our state-of-the-art Vocational Rehabilitation Center, these participants learned about independent living, job readiness, and the power of community! Each participant received a certificate of completion from us, as well as a certificate in customer service from the National Retail Federation. We at VISIONS are very proud of our participants and cannot wait to see how their career paths progress!
VISIONS held its first residential Adaptive Living Program training group at the VRC this summer. Six older adults attended a six-day training program, where they received instruction in adaptive communication, assistive technology, meal preparation, home maintenance, and financial management. In the evenings, participants played adaptive games such as Braille Bingo, and socialized with each other. The group shared and learned so much from each other, creating a sense of community and friendship that lasts beyond the program.
Iliana is a current sophomore at Marymount Manhattan College and a Lavelle Scholar. Since her introduction to VISIONS, Iliana has been goal-oriented, independent, and a great advocate for herself. Iliana is a Politics and Human Rights major and hopes to work in the field of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) to improve accessibility and equity for everyone. This past summer, VISIONS connected Iliana with an internship at Valley National Bank, one of VISIONS corporate partners. Iliana was an intern within the DEI team at Valley Bank and supported ongoing projects to improve the work culture and expand her knowledge on diversity, equity, and inclusion. During Iliana's interview, her supervisor was impressed with her curiosity, intelligence, and commitment to social justice. These qualities inspired her supervisor to take Iliana on as an intern. During the course of her internship, Iliana conducted research and interviewed current employees about the culture of the workplace and presented her findings to members of the leadership team. Iliana's supervisor was excited to have her this past summer and would be happy to be a reference for her in the future. Iliana reported that she learned a lot from her experience, and she is excited to see what other opportunities await her. In Spring 2024, Iliana will intern with a non-governmental organization supporting women’s rights and equality. She is very excited and is using this semester to continue her work with Model UN in preparation for some of her internship responsibilities.
Tiffany Edmonds is currently interning at the Xavier Society for the Blind. She is a native New Yorker, and considers herself a lifelong student of the world. As a legally blind person, she feels that the world benefits from nonprofits like Xavier Society, a nonprofit that works to make religious texts more accessible to people with visual impairments. The Xavier Society has given people like Tiffany a sense of belonging and a way to keep abreast of what's going on in terms of faith. Although she hopes her role will expand throughout the summer, she is currently coordinating the mailing of newsletters to donors and also outreaching to previous subscribers.
Kayla Sweet began her work experience training with Seeds and Sprouts, a daycare located in Brooklyn, in January 2023. Immediately, her supervisor recognized her as a diligent, caring, and responsible childcare provider. Kayla has a real passion for working with children, and her qualities and skills suit this position well. After completing her first work experience training with Seeds and Sprouts in March of 2023, Kayla’s supervisor expressed a desire to hire Kayla starting September 2023. Kayla embarked on a second work experience training with Seeds and Sprouts to acquire additional skills, responsibilities, and experience. Kayla began working as a part-time employee, and her supervisor had this to say about her: “She is doing great, and she’s comfortable in her position from all the volunteer/training work. Thank you so much for recommending her to Seeds and Sprouts. We hope to have her for many years to come.”
VISIONS Center on Aging hosted its second annual in-person Family & Friends Day on July 19th! Participants came together to celebrate with a day of activities including breakfast served by the volunteers at New York Cares, a special presentation on healthy living by Dr. Ramoutar, a lasagna lunch with a piano performance by Eric Ballard, a mobility cane clinic conducted by Certified Orientation & Mobility Specialist Eric Levy, a rousing game of Bingo (with a few twists), a technology presentation by Assistive Technology specialists William Daniels and Luisa Idrovo, and of course, raffles and prizes including an Amazon Echo Dot smart speaker, and some homemade sweet potato pie!
With the event halted by the pandemic over the last few years, it is fantastic to see such a resurgence of happy participants coming together, enjoying their communities, and making more lasting memories.
Each Summer, VISIONS hosts three week-long residential programs for children of all ages and their families, at VISIONS Center on Blindness (VCB). During these programs at our 37.5-acre campus in Rockland County, NY, children learn independent living skills while enjoying adaptive activities, games, sports, and experiences. Parents learn about resources for their children, participate in support groups, and receive training under blindfold from our licensed and certified Vision Rehabilitation and Orientation & Mobility instructors. Including the whole family in our programs, ensures that everyone leaves with a far greater understanding of life with vision loss, and are better able to support their child’s activities of daily living.
This year’s Bronx-Westchester event in May returned to the Bronx for a meaningful evening at the Pelham Bay-Split Rock Golf Course and raised approximately $35,000 to support VISIONS free services in the Bronx and Westchester! Drinks and a buffet dinner were served on the patio overlooking the course, and a terrific program highlighting the evening’s honorees followed under the tent. The event honored Maritza Fernandez, the Hudson Gateway Realtor Foundation, Evan Mittman, and Anthony Mormile.

Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital once again hosted the Manhattan Advisory’s Annual Awards Reception in June. The event raised over $30,000 to support VISIONS free services in Manhattan. Our honorees included Leslie Jones, Filomen M. D'Agostino Greenberg Music School; Denise Rabinowitz, VISIONS Board Member; Ananth Sampathkumar, Manhattan Advisory Board Member; and Sofia Tello, Sharing Glasses. The Advisory Board turned out in full force to support this terrific evening.
The VISIONS Brooklyn Advisory Annual Dinner took place at Gargiulo’s in July. Once again, there was an energy in the room and many first-time guests were able to hear about the quality that VISIONS provides throughout the borough. A special thanks to our outstanding honorees: Past International President of Lions Clubs International Douglas Alexander, Dr. Christine Chea, and Lola Waterman, and guest speaker Lisa Henry. Additional kudos to Joe Corace for his longtime leadership of the advisory board.
VISIONS Queens Advisory Board held its 6th Annual Cocktails for a Cause fundraiser this August. The festivities were held at J Fallon's Tap Room in Floral Park. Our generous hosts and venue owners, Marc and Jason DiCarlo, donated the space, staff, and food. Musician Richard Bohan donated live music, and more than 35 local businesses and supporters donated terrific door prizes. The afternoon event exceeded expectations, raising over $11,500 to support free services for VISIONS in Queens and Long Island. Special thanks to sponsors Stephanie Belanich and Maxine Conlin of Keller Williams Greater Nassau and The Sandra Atlas Bass Foundation, as well as to the members of our Queens Advisory Board and all our loyal supporters!
Thanks to efforts from our Staten Island Borough Coordinator, Gina Schlagel, VISIONS continues to increase its presence in the borough by attending networking events and health fairs, as well as sharing information about our free services. We were thrilled to be at the Boardwalk Bash Senior Health Fair, and honored to be an exhibitor at the Disability Pride Fair and meet SI Borough President Vito Fossella.

Despite the passing shower, it was a beautiful day on the course and on the courts. The outing raised over $150,000 to support VISIONS Center on Blindness (VCB) and our free services in Westchester and the Lower Hudson Valley. Many thanks to our honorees Carin Pai and Keanu Resnick; event co-chairs Ric Apter and Neal Miller; our Golf committee; our live auctioneer Michael Cocco; VISIONS volunteers; and the wonderful staff at Fairview Country Club for making this event a success.

VISIONS provides such meaningful impact to the lives of the members that they help. It is a truly rewarding experience to see the good that this organization does for others.
I can't speak highly enough for this organization. VISIONS has helped my family in learning how to cope and adapt to vision loss. Their services are spectacular and have been a huge life saver to our family. I can't say enough positive things about this organization.
VISIONS is a great organization with wonderful caring and supportive staff that go above and beyond to help clients. Staff help with everything from completing applications, to serving daily meals, to offering fun interactive classes that allow me to not feel lonely at home. I am really pleased with the services that I receive from VISIONS.
To Frankie Marcille and VISIONS Personnel:
Thank you very much for trying to make my life easier any way possible! You Frankie are a very devoted and punctual, caring employee, you helped me with my computer problem, without it I would have no outside connections. You take time, when patients need it, no matter what you planned. I thank you also for coming with me on an extended long trip to get help from your eye care provider. Thank you "VISIONS" for everything YOU provided, I much appreciate everything!
Gratefully,
Rita Moss
To Michexa and also to Bill who have provided so much support to my husband Bruce. They are knowledgeable, professional, and kind. The time spent with us is priceless. I want to commend you for your wonderful staff and hope they will receive recognition. It was Frann Glick from the eye support group who told us about VISIONS. I highly recommend her group as well.
Thanks again to you and your staff.

Edgar and I just returned from a weekend trip to VCB in Spring Valley. Separately, I am sending a donation to go specifically to VCB. Additionally, I want you to know how pleased we were with Steph and the entire staff who assisted everyone.
Thanks also to the chef and his assistants who worked so hard and provided such delicious, healthful and varied meals.
