The Cognitive Abilities Test is a brief test, measuring critical thinking and intellectual ability and requires the student to use reasoning and problem-solving skills. The test consists of nine sections: picture analogies, sentence completion, picture classification, number analogies, number puzzles, number series, figure matrices, paper folding and figure classification.
The CogAT test is administered to all 6th Grade Learners in October, and all 2nd Grade Learners in February as a baseline measure. If the POC/Teacher/HQC believes there is a Learner in another grade that would benefit from completing this assessment, special requests for other grades can be made for the October test date.
Any Learner choosing to take the CogAT test must complete the sign-up form and it must be signed by the parent prior to testing.
Once we receive the assessment results, you will be notified of your child’s performance. The results will help us meet the learning needs for all children through better understanding of how each approaches critical thinking tasks. These scores are one source of information used to determine eligibility for Gifted & Talented programming.
