Speech/Language intervention services are provided through our 3 to 1 model, where students receive direct therapy services with the therapist for three weeks per month and indirect services one week per month. This intervention model supports the Speech Therapist in implementing curriculum-based therapy and encourages interaction with teachers and parents about students’ needs. The indirect services weeks affords the Speech Therapist the opportunity to observe student's in the classroom, consult with teachers, participate in grade level meetings, schedule missed sessions, meet with parents, etc. This enables better communication between teaching staff and the therapist, which results in therapy activities that better align with the curriculum and improves generalization of targeted skills into the classroom setting.
Building level Speech/Language services are provided to students with mild speech and language difficulties. This service is obtained when a student is identified through our school's Response to Intervention (RTI) process. Building level Speech/Language intervention services is considered an Academic Intervention Service (AIS) and are typically are provided one time a month for 30 minute sessions in a small group setting.
Students referred to the Committee on Special Education and were identified as needing specific speech and language services in order to access the curriculum are provided with Speech/Language therapy as a related service. Frequency of service is dependent on the specific needs of each student. Speech/Language goals are identified and highlighted on the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP) and monitored throughout the year. Areas that are targeted address articulation, oral motor, pragmatic language, receptive language, and/or expressive language skills.
