2022 Referendum

Over the past year, the District has explored the best option for the future of the Viroqua Area Schools facilities. The District is committed to finding a solution that addresses the most pressing needs, reflects the priorities of the community, and meets the needs of students, while maximizing space within the existing building footprints; as we continue to provide quality educational opportunities.

After an unsuccessful referendum attempt in 2018, we sent a survey to our community to better understand if, when, and how to best address our facility challenges. The results of that survey showed us that many people believed the projects were too expensive, and there was not enough time to ask us questions or provide feedback.

This time we approached it differently, the community drove our master planning process through Facilities Planning Community Input Sessions and a community wide survey this spring. Residents provided feedback on project support and level of financial investment. The board took this feedback and unanimously adopted two referendum questions for the November 8, 2022 ballot.

If approved by voters, the referendums will address significant needs within the District, which cannot be addressed within the District’s annual budget.

The Preliminary Plan

Financial Investment

The District has been diligent in managing expenses and remaining fiscally responsible for our taxpayers. In 2024, we will make the final loan payment on the Middle and High School improvements that were approved by voters in 2004. This will help reduce the tax impact of the proposed referendum projects. Below is the estimated tax increase for the school portion of your taxes associated with each question.
