I am looking to understand how and why certain languages, accents, and dialects seem to be received more favorably than others in classrooms—and society as a whole. To answer this question, I'll be interviewing an Associate ESL Professor and observing ESL classrooms.

Based on my findings, I plan to examine ways to eliminate linguistic prejudice from classrooms. When people consider inequity in relation to an individual's identity, they often consider factors like race class gender, but an important factor that is sometimes overlooked is one's language. In many situations, people's language background may afford them a certain opportunity they might not have otherwise had, and it could also be the factor that prevents people from receiving an opportunity they deserve.
