Vicious Vikes Soap Box Derby Club: A Growing Tradition
In the spring of 2024, the Vicious Vikes Soap Box Derby Club was launched at Waterloo Elementary with a group of sixteen enthusiastic fifth-grade students. The club's inception stemmed from a workshop at the Akron race facility, where the potential for hands-on STEM learning was vividly demonstrated. The goal was simple: to bring practical, engaging STEM education to our fifth graders.
The inaugural year, despite not involving the construction of a car, was a resounding success. Utilizing two loaner cars provided by the Soap Box Derby, the students experienced the thrill of racing, sparking widespread interest among both students and staff. The excitement generated by the program was palpable and confirmed the need for a hands on STEM program.
Building on the momentum of this successful first year, the Vicious Vikes are determined to expand and enhance the program. We have now acquired a kit that will allow the students to build their own race car from the ground up. We are creating a tradition of fun and learning, ensuring that future Waterloo students have the opportunity to experience the excitement and educational benefits of the Soap Box Derby.
