A student having their own personal instrument will tend to take better care of the instrument as well as practice more. While there are always exceptions, if you are able to get your own it does usually work out better. We do have some school instruments available for those in financial need. If you are able to acquire your own instrument do so from a reputable music store/dealer. While you might find a very affordable "instrument" on ebay or Amazon, there tend to be so many issues with the instrument that the student will never produce a good sound and assume it is because they can't play when it reality it is all just the instrument holding them back.
There are certain key words that you should look for when looking to get a string instrument. Some of these words are good words while some are ones that when you see it to walk away. Until your child reaches the biggest size of their instrument and is going to stick with playing it, I highly suggest renting the instrument instead of buying. Most places as long as you rent you can trade in the instrument when you need the next size up

This is by no means an ABSOLUTE list, but merely a list of dealers I have worked with in the past. If you are going to get your own instrument, you are welcome to get it from anywhere, but please be wary of what you are getting. I am also only listing store that have reached out to me or that I have worked with.
Located in Indianapolis, Indiana they visit our school weekly. If anything were to happen to your instrument we can play middle man so you do not have to drive to Indianapolis to take care of it.

While I typically try to shy away from online stores, I have used them personally in the past to purchase a Viola for myself that I still use today.
