It is a great honour for me to be among the three elected members of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in the social sciences (law, economics, sociology, demography, political science) during the triennial election of academicians.

The final milestone in my election as a member of the HAS was the inaugural lecture, titled “On Fertility: from the fertility gap to social acceleration”, which I delivered on April 9, 2026.

I am a sociologist and a demographer. I lead the Demographic Program at the Doctoral School of Demography and Sociology. 

My areas of interest are:

• Family formation and fertility

• Attitudes and values towards the family

• Social inequalities and poverty

• International comparisons

• Longitudinal studies

Previously I taught at the Corvinus University of Budapest, and conducted research at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock, the Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg, the Stockholm University Linnaeus Center on Social Policy and Family Dynamics in Europe, the Social Science Center Berlin (WZB), and Collegium Budapest - Institute of Advanced Study.

Currently I hold the positions of:

• Chief Scientific Advisor at the Hungarian Demographic Research Institute (former Director from 1999 until my resignation in 2023)

• Professor at the University of Pécs, Department of Sociology

• Head of Doctoral School of Demography and Sociology at University of Pécs

• Honorary President of the EAPS Council (European Association for Population Studies)

• Corresponding Member Elected of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences
