Before reading the translation, a quick introduction to Chinese history (not meant to be treated as a textbook, though!)
Back when science didn't exist, people relied on rituals/spells to solve almost anything that went wrong (though it really depends on how superstitious the family is). Illness? Draught? Possessed? There's probably a ritual for everything (I'm no historian, but u get my point)
These rituals would be carried out by 'professionals' known as 道士 (daoshi). These rituals include ringing bells / dancing with swords / arranging copper coins... etc, etc (idk the exact process, I'm not a professional 🤣 but if you watched C-Drama, you get the idea~)
Now imagine this: a family believes that there's a ritual to make their children smart! And if they're not obedient, it must be because the child is sick! For the sake of their child, they believe they must spend money on the child! Now with this in mind, enjoy the story Zhou Shen is telling~
铜钱剑铃铛响 朱砂画满了纸张
