Who does our distance prompt us to devalue?
Why do some get a gravestone, a memorial, the delicate work of enbalmment, and others are buried beneath rubble, unnamed collateral?
What life deserves mourning? What deserves preserving? And who gets to make that decision?
I mean, it's all about resources, right? The resources that allow us to live in the highly consumptive ways that so many of us do. The fear of losing the power to control those resources.
How can we exercise the power we do have in situations where the suffering of others directly or indirectly benefits us?
Will we one day suffer the same fate, as resources dwindle and conflict inevitably increases?
Individually, and together, how might we make a different choice?
