To be an artist means to create original artwork that serves a purpose. While technical skill aids the artist in producing work that meets this criterion, it is not a direct measure of the value of the artist’s work.
In regard to originality, an artist has developed his/her own style and personal aesthetic. This shows that the artist has the ability to evaluate art he/she has been exposed to, as well as evaluate what he/she has learned while studying art. An artist can break boundaries through their art, having the freedom to experiment stylistically, showcasing new possibilities that do not necessarily reflect what they have been exposed to.
Having a unique vision is also essential to the identity of an artist, even if this goal is as simple as creating art for the artist’s own enjoyment or for the enjoyment of others. An artist does not create art purely for the sake of money; such reveals a lack of the inspiration intrinsic to the definition of an artist. However, profit can be part of an artist’s cause. For example, if selling or performing his/her art is the means by which the artist makes a living, then that is a legitimate cause.
Above all, to be an artist is to have meaning connected to one’s work. Whether that meaning is to raise awareness, to protest, to relax, to get by, or to make the world a more beautiful place, an artist makes deliberate creative choices in every brush stroke, every note, and every movement of the body to communicate his/her purpose.
Hello! My name is Zoë Street. I fell in love with arts and crafts as a toddler and that love has stuck with me ever since. I started taking art classes at nine years old, and I'm still attending to this day. Originally I mostly did drawing and painting, but I have since ventured into three-dimensional art and found a passion there as well.
Outside of art, I also love history, food, and traveling. Currently living in southern California, I am already surrounded by a rainbow of different kinds of people, but I am very thankful for the opportunities I have to explore the world. Much of the inspiration for my pieces comes from the other cultures I encounter on my travels. Aside from that, my inspiration also stems from the inner workings of my own mind. I'd like to say that I have a vivid imagination.
If you have already taken a look at my work, you may have noticed some underlying themes: a love for shiny, sparkly objects and color. Indeed, I am proud to say that my favorite color is gold. I aspire to surround myself with beautiful things, especially those of my own creation. While this may sound vain, as humans we are wired to derive happiness from beautiful environments. To that end, I also adore crafting and I am quite proud of my highly organized craft closet. I decorate my space with reused objects, everyday materials, and of course, glitter.
I hope you enjoy my work! If you have any comments or questions, please don't hesitate to contact me at zoestreet@icloud.com
