The Zodiac Killer is responsible for at least five documented murders, although he claimed to kill up to 37 people in letters he sent to the media. The five confirmed murders took place in the San Francisco Bay Area between 1968 and 1969, with most of the victims being young couples who were attacked while parked in remote locations.
5 Confirmed Murders Timeline
December 20, 1968
The Zodiac Killer's first confirmed murder took place at a secluded location on Lake Herman Road in Benicia, California. The victims were 17-year-old David Faraday and 16-year-old Betty Lou Jensen, who were shot multiple times while parked in a car.
July 4, 1969
The second attack took place in Vallejo, California. 22-year-old Darlene Ferrin and 19-year-old Michael Mageau were sitting in a parked car when they were approached by a man who shot them both multiple times. Ferrin died from her injuries, but Mageau survived and was able to provide a description of the attacker.
September 27, 1969
The third confirmed attack was carried out at Lake Berryessa, near Napa, California. A young couple, 22-year-old Bryan Hartnell and 20-year-old Cecelia Shepard, were picnicking when they were approached by a man wearing a black hood and armed with a knife. The attacker bound and stabbed them both, but Hartnell survived and was able to provide a description of the hooded man.
October 11, 1969
The fourth confirmed murder took place in San Francisco's Presidio Heights neighborhood. The victim was 29-year-old cab driver Paul Stine, who was shot in the head by a passenger who took his wallet and a piece of his shirt as a trophy.
October 14, 1969
The fifth Zodiac killing took place in a residential area of San Francisco's Pacific Heights neighborhood. The victim was 20-year-old college student and waitress, Cheri Jo Bates. She was found dead on the Riverside City College campus in Riverside, California. While there is some debate about whether this killing was actually committed by the Zodiac Killer, it is included in the official list of confirmed murders attributed to the killer.
