Dr. Yalew has more than 6 years of experience in software development and engineering. He successfully developed and uploaded T2E, Awera and CheQ-In mobile apps in both Google and Apple stores. T2E is a flutter app that transforms text to emoji, using ChatGPT. The Awera app, which was the first of its kind for Ethiopia in 2016 and discontinued due to new financial regulations in South Korea, enabled Ethiopian diaspora to top-up calling and data minutes to their loved ones living back home. Whereas, the CheQ-In app is developed to automate the visitors log used by Keimyung University to trace Covid-19. Flutter, Android and Swift were used for the front-end of the app while the back-end is developed using Google cloud, PHP and MySQL.
My interest in designing products that solve social issues crosses to hardware as well. When I was a child I used to be very frustrated at how girls and women in Ethiopia prepared Injera, which is a staple food made of Teff flour. It is consumed two times a day by more than 70 million people. In a country where only 25% of the population has electric coverage, 75% of the households turn to woodstoves to bake Injera, which contributes to climate change due to deforestation. Collecting firewood and dead branches is also the duty of girls and women. In addition, woodstoves are unsanitary and cause health complications. Therefore, I designed and developed a prototype of Injera Printer (IP). I received a patent for this work, here. IP takes flour, water, and yeast as an input and automatically prints/bakes Injera. My goal is to empower women, combat climate change, improve health and enhance energy efficiency by automating the process of preparing Injera.
