Informed Materials: Design with Designed Materials as a Method

2023

This recent publication presents the outcomes of an experimental and transdisciplinary approach in materials design. It showcases new design concepts that are based on and influenced by material experimentation, emerging from the teaching activities conducted at the Institute for Materialdesign IMD in Offenbach University of Art and Design. These concepts place materials at the forefront of the design process.

The paper delves into four key characteristics of materials design: properties, structures, interfaces, and systems. It highlights the realization that materials' potential goes beyond their inherent properties, leading to novel ways of conceptualizing designs. Within this context, materials serve as carriers of diverse information, engaging in a dialogue with their environment. They increasingly assume the role of the actual object and convey information in an intuitive and informative manner.
