Welkom Real Stars clinched their third Ziyawa Soccer Championship trophy after a comprehensive 3 – 1 victory over Destroyers in the final.
A Welkom double always looked like a real possibility from the start of the Championship. But Umfolozi FC would not allow that. In a nail biting final they beat Bugalove Killers, the 2023 champions from Welkom.
The multi-faceted annual Ziyawa Soccer Championship which is held at Gijima is the culmination and celebration of Bidvest Protea Coin, Gijima Sport, Youthzone and Amaverkykers sport initiatives throughout the year.

The Ziyawa Soccer Championship forms an essential part of the broader strategy of utilizing sport to create social cohesion, building a trusting environment and being the foundation for various other initiatives.
Increasingly, sport is becoming a component in improving integrated security solutions to Bidvest Protea Coin clients.
The Ziyawa Soccer Championship which takes place just after youth day, is a celebration of youth and is positioned to allow the participants from disadvantaged communities to flourish, learn, have fun and return home motivated, inspired and with a message of hope.
The Gijima Sport Legends enables an essential aspirational component to the Ziyawa Soccer Championship and within the broader sport initiatives.
Three focus points were workshopped with the under 14 players and their coaches during the Championship and this will become part of the broader initiatives going forward. The focus points were incorporated in the branded Gijima Sport Legends soccer shirts.

The Ziyawa Soccer Championship also enables Bidvest Protea Coin employees to amongst other things, showcase their talents beyond normal duties, improve camaraderie, have clean healthy fun, improve wellness and health and improve relations between Management and employees.

The Ziyawa Senior Soccer Championship is preceded by play-offs where required, which took place in May.
The under 14 teams are invited to the Ziyawa Soccer Championship. Two Ziyawa Soccer Challenge events feed into the Championship, namely the Ziyawa Bojanala and uMfolozi Soccer Challenges. These events take place annually in November and April respectively. These events collectively attracted 60 teams and 900 under 14 soccer players.
The boys then participated in various edutainment activities.
In celebration of Bidvest Protea Coin’s 50 year celebrations they signed the Bidvest Protea Coin miniature shirts which will find its place in the Great Hall.
The young stars left their mark on the wall of the Great Hall.
They attended a talk by the mental health foundation on the drug abuse.
Reading skills were sharpened with the launch of the Read for Meaning WhatsApp channel.
A visit to the Gijima Demo Farm opened their minds to the importance of food security and new ways of farming.
Each team was allocated waste bags and tasked with ensuring that they kept Gijima in pristine condition.
It was time for the youngsters to watch Gijima Sport Legends playing an exhibition match against the Department of Agriculture Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD) Soccer Team. The Legends came out on top by 3 goals to 1.
Soccer time arrived for the under 14’s.
The finalists were eventually decided after two epic, stressful, top clashes.
It was play time for the seniors – all the way to the semifinals.
Destroyers and Welkom Real Stars emerged as the finalists, beating Gijima Training Academy and Richards Bay Minerals on their way. High drama, tension and a penalty shoot out in the one semi while the other was one way traffic.
Dogs, drones, choppers and more was on the menu for the youngsters. An experience of a lifetime.
SCI- Bono provided valuable career guidance and a technology experience to remember.
After KFC at Pitstop the boys got stuck into experiences such as paintball shooting, obstacle course and physical activities.
It was time for the Ziyawa Senior Soccer Individual Awards.
Costa’s Invitational Team got proceedings going. Our inspirational CEO chased shadows with his teammates for most of the game but with a little help of a few imports, the game ended 4 all. The coaches from the various soccer teams showed class and skill but were outnumbered. The power of sport to bring people from all walks of life together was on display.
The Gijima Sport Legends strut their stuff against a Gijima Sport Invitational Team. The term – class is permanent – was apt in this case.
The community walk had a surprise in store for the under 14’s.
It went down to the wire in the under 14 Final. An amazing goal was the difference.
