Principle Investigator
Tiancong received his PhD in physics from the Ohio State University in 2019 with Prof. Roland K. Kawakami working on spin transport and magnetism in two-dimensional materials. After that, Tiancong spent 4 years as a post-doctoral researcher at University of California, Berkeley with Prof. Michael F. Crommie working on investigating correlated and topological states with scanning tunneling microscopy. Tiancong received his BSc in Physics from Peking University, China in 2012.
Postdoctoral Scholars
Haojie Guo obtained his Ph.D. degree in Condensed Matter Physics from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Spain) in 2023. Afterwards, he performed a 2-year postdoctoral research stay in Donostia International Physics Center in the group of Miguel M. Moreno. Currently, I am interested in exploring exotic quantum phenomena arising in moiré materials and artificial van der Waals heterostructures integrated in gate-tunable devices and studied via STM/STS and ncAFM.
Graduate Students
Christopher received his BSc from the University of Minnesota. He has experience working with infrared interferometry, AFM, cryogenic systems, and optics. His current interests are in quantum materials and microscopy techniques. He is from a Costa Rican-American family from Minneapolis, MN, and is excited for the tropical weather of Indiana!
Kyung Jun (Kelvin) received his bachelor degree majoring in electrical engineering with a minor in physics at Purdue. He performed undergraduate research with the Zhu lab, and decided to stay with the group to pursue Ph.D. in Physics. He has experience with hall measurements of magnetic materials, transfer of 2D materials, and AFM. His research focuses on STM investigation of 2D materials and devices.
Daniel is a senior at ETH Zurich, Switzerland. and spent the fall term of 2024 as an exchange student at Purdue University with the Zhu lab, and will return as a graduate student starting Fall 2025. In the Zhu Lab, he focuses on setting up molecular beam epitaxy systems for quantum material synthesis. Originally from Germany, Daniel is also a former athlete rower with a deep passion for all things sports-related.
Undergraduate Students
Brayden Kauffmann is a sophomore pursuing Physics with a minor in nuclear engineering. He is interested in nuclear and particle physics, and hopes to attend graduate school after his undergraduate studies. He is from Anna, Ohio and is excited to explore the realm of condensed matter physics!
Priya Mishra is a freshman from Westfield, Indiana pursuing Physics with a minor in Mathematics and Art/Design Studio. She is interested in quantum and astrophysics, and she plans to attend graduate school after her undergraduate studies. In the Zhu Lab, she is excited to learn more about different topics in physics, magnetism, and 2D materials.
Manaswini is a sophomore in Applied Physics from Delhi, India, with a passion for computational physics, quantum mechanics, twistronics, and 2D materials. With a CS minor, She aims to harness computational tools for Physics research. Outside the lab, She enjoys swimming and drinking boba tea.
