I am a postdoct fellow in theoretical physics at the University of Oslo, the birthplace of anyon. My research focuses on quantum many-body physics and condensed matter theory. I am drawn to problems where elegant mathematics reveals unexpected phenomena, results that can be appreciated by a broad audience and remembered by future generations, regardless of their immediate relevance to quantum technology.

My name is written in Chinese 張 (Zhang) 釗 (Zhao). The literal meaning of 張 is "to extend" (as in the Latin root of tensor) or "to deform", and the ideogram 釗 metaphorically means "to endeavor" or "to encourage".
I hail from Tianjin (lit. "the ford of heaven"), capital of humor and folk art, and hometown of Chern. I went to college in Hefei, the "science city", where Yang grew up.
I guess I was a first-generation college student (in at least six generations), which is very common for my generation in PRC in both good and bad ways. Dating further back, some of my ancestors were among the most celebrated academicians and intellectuals in Ming and Qing dynasties, including a main advocator of the westernization and industrialization reforms during late Qing, according to our family tree book.
