I'm Hu (pronounced: WHO), a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Maryland, College Park. I am an ethicist whose research focuses on philosophical issues related to emerging technologies, particularly social media. My current research projects include how social media platforms alter the distribution of key epistemic resources, whether individuals bear responsibility for addressing the problem of fake news, and how epistemic virtues can help people navigate the current epistemic environment.
Originally from Shanghai, China, I studied philosophy at St. Olaf College and Northern Illinois University prior to UMD. At UMD, I have taught various courses multiple times, from lower-level introductory courses such as “Contemporary Moral Issues,” to intermediate courses such as “Social and Political Philosophy,” and upper-level courses such as “Law, Morality, and War.” These courses were delivered in various formats, including online (both synchronous and asynchronous) and in-person. I have received pedagogy trainings from various places, including the AAPT (American Association of Philosophy Teachers) Teaching and Learning Seminar during Summer 2024.
Beyond philosophy, I enjoy photography (see here) and pop music, especially city-pop and jazz hip-hop. I'm also an amateur 5-Dan Go player (and yes, AlphaGo inspired my interest in emerging technologies). I also have a lovely cat Mia (see here).
