Opening position(s): One PhD (Responsible Mineral Sourcing) or Master's Student (ESG Data Analytics)
Students with a strong background in computer science, machine learning, statistics, domain-specific data science (particularly GIS or LCA), or process modelling in chemical/environmental engineering are welcome to reach out for a potentially funded position.
Ph.D. students
I look for candidates who are interested in interdisciplinary sustainability research and are equipped with novel data analytical skills (e.g., life-cycle assessment and optimization, integrated assessment modelling for climate change, geospatial statistical analysis, agent-based models, or machine learning in earth sciences) to inform mining, resource, and environmental policy-making.
If you are interested, please send me an email with your CV and a concrete research statement (>=3 pages, references included). A general personal statement is not needed. Your research statement is expected to include an introduction (literature review), key research questions, applied methods and data, implementation plan, expected results, and a timeline of milestones. Coding experience is required, and a publication record is an asset.
Note: We do not have a direct-entry PhD program, so every applicant needs to hold a master's degree (a taught master's degree is acceptable). Due to the high volume of emails, a query without a research statement might not be answered.
Master's students
I only support exceptional thesis-based master's students. If you are interested, please send me an email with your resume/CV, transcripts and a brief summary of your research achievements. Excellent grades in math, statistics, environmental/chemical/materials/mining engineering courses are desired. A preliminary research plan (1-2 pages) at Queen's is an asset.
Note: We do not accept "self-funded" applicants. Our funding package is only sufficient for domestic students because international students pay much higher tuition fees, and IRCC requires much higher financial stability when applying for a study permit. Therefore, we only consider domestic applicants or international applicants who hold an external merit-based scholarship or fellowship as supplementary financial support.
